Temperature resistance of alumina wear-resistant ceramics
2024-10-09 11:16:09

Aluminum oxide ceramic wear-resistant parts, as typical aluminum oxide ceramic parts, have good comprehensive performance, sufficient strength, excellent plasticity, and low hardness, which is also one of the reasons why they are widely used. Similar to most other metals, the tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness of alumina ceramic parts increase with decreasing temperature, while plasticity decreases with decreasing temperature.

The tensile strength increases rapidly within the range of 15-80 ℃, but the change slows down as the temperature further decreases, and the yield strength increases uniformly. More importantly, as the temperature of alumina ceramic parts decreases, the impact toughness decreases slowly, and there is no ductile brittle transition temperature.

The microstructure of alumina ceramics is usually equiaxed crystals, which are polycrystalline structures composed of ionic or covalent bonds, resulting in lower fracture toughness. Under the action of external loads, stress can cause small cracks on the surface of ceramics, which rapidly propagate and lead to brittle fracture. So in the cutting process of alumina ceramics, there is often a phenomenon of fragmentation, that is, small fragmentation holes appear on the surface of the ceramic.
