Decomposition of alumina ceramic injection process
11-29-2022

Alumina ceramics are also known as precision ceramics, special ceramics, or high-tech ceramics. It is a ceramic made of selected raw materials and produced according to a special manufacturing process. Precise control of chemical composition, excellent performance. It is widely used in microelectronics, nuclear reactor, aerospace, magnetic fluid power generation, artificial bone, artificial joint and other high-tech and industrial fields.

Alumina ceramics are very different from ordinary ceramics in composition and manufacturing process. Ordinary ceramics are made by three processes: raw material preparation, billet forming and kiln firing. Alumina ceramics are mostly sintered by powder. In the forming process, due to the high hardness of ceramics, it is difficult to cut, especially the non-aligned products with complex shapes. After forming and sintering, they are finished products without further processing.

In order to meet this requirement, people imitate the injection molding technology of polymer material industry to produce plastic parts and process alumina ceramic products, and have obtained satisfactory results. The ceramic injection molding technology is to add thermoplastic resin, thermosetting resin, plasticizer and antifriction agent to the ceramic powder, so that the ceramic powder becomes a viscous elastomer, and then the heated mixed slurry is injected into the metal mold from the nozzle, cooling and curing.

The injection molding principle of alumina ceramic is basically the same as that of plastic. In order to obtain a dense and uniform injection molding body, the concentration of ceramic powder should be higher. But too high will make the formability worse. In order to improve the fluidity of the mixed billet, the viscosity of the dispersant polymer system should be reduced. As a pretreatment, it is very important to improve the dispersion of ceramic powders. In order to improve polymer fluidity, appropriate plasticizers and lubricants need to be added.

Alumina ceramic raw material particle size is generally 1 μm, add the binder (or additive) fully mix and stir. During the stirring process, the ceramic powder is moistened and coated with a binder, which all becomes a uniform compound prior to injection molding. After cooling, drying and crushing, the particles suitable for injection molding machine funnel feed can be obtained.
